The former Rickard Hotel recalls the early history of Honokaa. This board-and-batten building was built by Captain George Wilfong as his house. In 1893, it became the residence of William H. Rickard, his wife, and their sixteen children. Rickard, born in Cornwall, England, in 1846, immigrated to Hawaii with his wife at the age of twenty. For many years he managed the Honokaa Sugar Company, which he helped form. Rickard was a royalist, and with the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, he was among the counterrevolutionaries who were arrested and imprisoned. While a political prisoner he contracted tuberculosis, and following his release, he died of the disease in 1899. His widow converted their house into a hotel in 1911. The bungalow entrance was added about this time. In 1963, the Salvation Army purchased this building.
