This three-story brick building, dispenser of drink to innumerable students, replaced the log St. Patrick's Inn (1747), a headquarters for Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon during their famous survey in the 1760s, which stood just east. Edgar Allen Poe reputedly lodged there. The B&O Railroad was laid behind the hotel in 1886, over local opposition. The place has endured its share of drunken sprees, including one in 1974 that saw a mob of 4,000 students and others battle 200 police for hours. The Deer Park had its porch and balcony (later accretions) torn off in 1951, then replaced in a restoration (2001, Design Collaborative).
