Jesuits established Marquette in 1881, making it Milwaukee’s first liberal arts university, and named it for the seventeenth-century missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette. The university admitted only male students until 1909, when the first class of female students was enrolled. Marquette currently enrolls about twelve thousand students, and its campus encompasses many city blocks.
