Capuchins founded St. Benedict the Moor parish in 1908 to serve Roman Catholic African Americans moving into Milwaukee from Chicago. Its storefront chapel welcomed the African American community living in neighborhoods west of the central business district. Miller Brewing Company president Ernest Miller pledged money for construction of the church and boarding school. For St. Benedict’s modest but well-articulated brick facade, the church architecture firm of Erhard Brielmaier and Sons looked to the Lombard Romanesque style: round-arched doors and windows, heavily corbeled gables, and a tile roof. St. Benedict’s remains an active and ethnically diverse parish.
