The centerpiece of a large cemetery, Sherwood Abbey is a severe, cruciform-plan granite building suggestive of an overscaled family mausoleum. All four sides are embellished with colonnaded entrance porticoes and peaked lintels. Housing the chapel, administrative and sales offices, and 320 crypts, the building's somewhat forbidding aspect is perhaps intended to ensure an appropriate solemnity among visitors to the grounds. The cemetery is landscaped with winding paths and trees.
