1888. 412 S. Main St.

This exuberantly decorated house reflects Wilton's prominent place in the community and his wealth and prestige. Moving to Harrisonburg from Canada in 1865, Wilton opened a hardware store and soon became one of the town's leading business and civic leaders, serving as president of the First National Bank and on the city council. His three-story painted brick house with a wraparound porch, multiple gables with sawn trim, pointed-arched windows, and a corner tower with a polygonal spire reveals the eclectic nature of Victorian architecture, blending elements from Gothic, Italianate, and Queen Anne. The house is now an inn and restaurant.
