1871, Anthony Hockman. 266 E. Market St.

Residential development spread east along Market Street in the late nineteenth century, serving business and professional residents with more picturesque neighborhoods along these hilly streets. Local designer and builder Hockman built this fashionable three-bay, two-story Italianate frame residence for himself. Although retaining the familiar I-house plan, the house is more heavily ornamented than most local examples. The projecting central bay is capped with a pedimented gable, and the house is enriched with a front porch, elaborate window caps, corner pilasters, and a multi-windowed and hipped-roof cupola. Hockman's house showed the community his awareness of popular styles and his ability to integrate new architectural ideas into a handsome design.
