This large brick house was built for Henry Bowyer, clerk of the Botetourt County Court. Asher Benjamin's books provided the inspiration for the facade's decorative elements, although the full-height portico tends to obscure these features. The house's Greek Revival styling is evident in its squared shape, low-hipped roof, wide wooden cornice, and large openings surmounted by flat lintels with corner blocks. To avoid the heat of the summer sun, the west elevation is windowless and the east windows are shams that are
positioned uneasily beneath the rising stacks of the interior-end chimneys. On the left is a small one-story kitchen wing. The nearby large Santillane Farm was once part of the same property.
