This plank-fronted house with a monumental Ionic portico is easily the most imposing of the houses on Wayne Street. It was built for Randall Wilmot, father of David Wilmot who was born in the Solomon Moore house just south of Sugar Street. David Wilmot, a founder of the Republican Party, added the Wilmot Proviso to a U.S. House of Representatives bill that would have prohibited slavery in the new territories carved out of Mexico. The handsome pilastered facade attested to Randall Wilmot's success as the town's principal merchant.
