This Baptist congregation was the first to be formed in the county, but half a century elapsed until the construction of their first building. The plank-fronted building with its Ionic columns carrying a shallow pedimented porch is a link to the Baptists of Roger Williams's colony in Rhode Island. Two more churches are on Church Street: a modest brick, gabled-roofed building with Gothic detail at 5th and Church streets built in 1860 for St. Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church, and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church constructed in 1904 at 7th and Church streets.
