Six years after he founded Lutheran Theological Seminary, Samuel Simon Schmucker founded Pennsylvania College, which was renamed Gettysburg College in 1921. He had quickly learned what other purveyors of higher education discovered, namely that a feeder school was needed to supply adequately trained students. He commissioned Philadelphian John C. Trautwein, who had recently designed the Second Presbyterian Church (demolished) in Carlisle, to design its first building.
