In 1950, the property became the summer home of Dwight D. Eisenhower, former general of the armies in World War II, then president of Gettysburg College, and between 1952 and 1960, the U.S. president. During the Eisenhowers’ occupation, the house was largely rebuilt in the Pennsylvania farmhouse model, but the farm is most notable for its several great barns including two traditional bank barns as well as the 1957–1958 show barn designed by Victor Re and supervised by Robert Hartley of Pennsylvania State University. The show barn was the center of activities for the operations of the Eisenhower farms.
