The New York Society, the Whig predecessors to New York's infamous Tammany Hall, chose the Native American sachem Tamanend or Tammany as their symbol. To represent their regiment they raised this remarkable bronze of a Plains Indian teepee atop a granite marker. Nearby, many of the numerous Irish brigades chose the shamrock as their insignia.
