1929, Carrère and Hastings. 2222 S St. NW

The Reed House's wide five-bay facade provided Carrère and Hastings with an expansive brick wall that they subdivided in a symmetrical but irregular manner. Small unframed windows are cut directly into the ground-story brick walls, concentrating attention on the limestone frames of five second-story French windows. Blind brick arches above them repeat the regular end-brick pattern used on the ground-floor walls, carrying this subtle textural variation to the house's upper tier. Windows on the top story are confined to the middle three bays, leaving broad blank corners and focusing the eye on the door's broken pediment complete with escutcheon.
