Berryville was Carroll County’s only seat until Eureka Springs also achieved that distinction in 1883. This red brick, rather plain courthouse was enlarged in 1905 with a third story and a mansard roof on what was originally a flat-roofed structure. Square four-story towers with pyramid roofs were added to the front corners of the building. Unlike many Arkansas courthouses, the building does not occupy the center of the square, but sits at one corner, facing it. The large square, bisected by a street, retains much of its late-nineteenth-century character surrounded by one- and two-story commercial structures. Today, the courthouse accommodates a museum of local history and the headquarters of the Carroll County Historical Society.
