Mayers Block

1887, John Granville Meyers. 221–225 Pennsylvania Ave. SE

The Mayers Block was built by Jonathan Shane for developer Theodore Mayers at a cost of $15,000. The three buildings were designed by J. G. Meyers in the Queen Anne style to have shops at street level with residences above. His composition of triple-arch windows on the two upper stories of equal height on each building, as well as the expansive pediments—triangular in the center flanked by arched end ones—offered ample opportunities for a rich collection of molded terracotta and corbeled brick patterns.
