Erected on the sites of Wing Kee's Laundry and Jesse Neumann's saloon, this two-story clubhouse of polished brick features a two-lane bowling alley, a billiard hall, a banquet room, and a 35-by-60-foot lodge hall. Three local contractors erected this eclectic edifice. Italianate windows, a mini-mansard roof with roundel windows, and a third-story cherub face grace the front facade, which culminates in a corner tower sprouting into an Art Nouveau outdoor chandelier. Some 300 “wearers of the antlers” helped lay the cornerstone for lodge 492 on July 31, 1904. The Elks Club, virtually unchanged inside and out, is a stately monument to one of the fraternal orders that were surrogate families to single miners.
