1963, Bill Lumpkins. Colorado 8, just north of U.S. 285

For this restaurant replica of Bent's Fort (
OT11), owner Sam Arnold commissioned Bill Lumpkins, a leading Santa Fe architect. Craftsmen used local red earth and straw to make the 80,000 bricks for this adobe castle with a single large entry gate, round corner tower, and upstairs accommodations resembling those of Bent's Fort. Ox blood was used to seal the tile floors and give them a lustrous, rich red color. The interior incorporates many other southwestern details, including the Padre Martinez chairs and the southwestern cooking of Sam and Carrie Arnold.
