Evergreen Cemetery, on a ponderosa pine–clad hill called Mount Washington, contains graves moved from the original City Cemetery, which was visible from the D&RG depot and discouraged health seekers and tourists. William Palmer selected a large block of untrimmed Pikes Peak granite for his headstone. Author Helen Hunt Jackson and many other Colorado Springs celebrities rest in this 220-acre cemetery. The rustic Romanesque Revival chapel (1906, L. A. Pease) is of Manitou Springs green stone.
