Winfield Scott Stratton, who made millions in Cripple Creek gold mines, built this golden brick temple of capitalism to facilitate stockholder investment in Cripple Creek. Five stories in the Beaux-Arts Neoclassical style culminate in a bracketed, carved Indiana limestone cornice protruding boldly from the plane of the facade. Piers separate fenestration bays, with swags in heavy relief decorating spandrels between the floors. The first level has been resheathed in travertine.
