Today's campus for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is built around the deluxe tuberculosis sanatarium known as the “asylum of the gilded pill.” This state-of-the art sanatarium and its many wealthy patients did much for the local economy before it closed in 1964. The three-story structure was donated to the university as an administration building. It is of uncoursed, stuccoed stone with a flat roof, four corner
towers, and high parapets to provide privacy for the roof-top sun deck. Pyramidal tower roofs echo the hipped roofs of enclosed multi-story bays that were once open sleeping porches. The old landmark rises above the 400-acre campus of many large, newer horizontal brick and concrete structures.
