1936, John Aaron, builder. 1989, restoration. 2817 N. Nevada Ave. (NR)

North Nevada Avenue evolves from a street of fine homes along a landscaped median to a commercial strip above Jackson Street. Its prize piece of roadside Americana is this restaurant and bar mimicking a traditional Navajo dwelling. Thick, hand-hewn pine slabs were fitted on site to form a domed roof. Around 1940 a second hogan was added to the east of the first, with a pentagonal addition at the rear for an office. Neon zigzags along the eaves and outlines the 17-foot-tall Navajo sign. Next door, El Sombrero, 2821 North Nevada Avenue, is a tiny cinderblock restaurant under a huge concrete sombrero.
