Calhoun Square long served as a playground for the adjacent Massie Common School, including annual May Day

celebrations, with student dancing around a maypole that continues today. Despite this, a streetcar line passed through the square from 1877 until 1946 in line with Abercorn Street. In 1937 half of the square was beautified.
