After Mills B. Lane Sr., president of the Citizens and Southern National Bank, hired the New York City firm of Mowbray and Uffinger in 1907 to design his bank (2.5) on Johnson Square, he engaged them to create this magnificent red brick Colonial Revival house. Mounted on a balustraded plinth with a massive swan-neck pediment atop a ponderous Ionic portico as its compositional focal point, the house presents a commanding figure to the voluminous traffic that enters the historic district via Drayton Street. The front and west gardens, including the brick retaining walls, were designed by Clermont Lee in 1972. A comprehensive four-year restoration of the house by J. T. Turner Construction garnered local and state preservation awards.
