
With its membership dating back to 1855, when nine free blacks organized in a bakery at Perry Lane and Habersham Street, this Greek Revival church represents a familiar story of congregational growth and aspiration. The 1943 merging of St. Stephen’s Episcopal on Troup Square with St. Augustine’s Episcopal on West Broad Street prompted their move to Savannah’s premier African American main street, where they commissioned this refined building designed by an established local white architect.
