The original structures of this complex were part of or later incorporated into the Tivoli-Union Brewery, which went out of business in 1969. The tallest building (1890) was one of the first breweries in Colorado and has the oldest wells in Denver. The West Denver Turnhalle Opera House (1882, Harold W. Baerresen) and its horseshoe-shaped balcony await restoration. Frederick Eberley designed the distinctive Italianate tower (1890) that still crowns the brewery. The bottling and storage building at the corner of 9th and Walnut was a later addition. The Auraria Higher Education Center encouraged private developers to renovate the brewery as a retail mall during the 1980s. Students voted in 1991 to use the Tivoli also as an expanded student center, a plan rejected by a less preservation-minded student body in the 1970s.
