One obvious example of the rental housing built for mine workers is the 500 block of Kennedy Street, where six once-identical bungalows sit in a line on the uphill side. Built in 1913 for Conrad W. Fries, a miner, and Ernest R. Jaeger, owner of the Alaska Steam Laundry, the houses are one-and-a-half-story bungalows, with gable fronts and Craftsman-style brackets. Most of the one-story front porches have been altered, but they were originally one-bay gable-roofed vestibules.
