The design for this massive Richardsonian Romanesque structure with a substantial corner tower was published in American Architect and Building News in 1892. Dessez came from Washington, where he had apprenticed with the Hornblower firm, and the building resembles several churches in the District of Columbia. The wide interior space and hammerbeam roof are impressive, as is the glass, which consists of two signed Tiffany windows and several from England by the Heaton firm. Farther west on Cornwall Street at the corner of Liberty is a small park which commemorates the site of the Old Stone Church (1766), the first Methodistowned property in the United States.
