The contribution of rice farming to the economy of the upper Coastal Bend is monumentalized in this parallel pair of rice storage silos. At the time of their construction, El Campo–based Rice Enterprises described them as the largest rice-drying and storage complex in Texas. The multiplication of tall reinforced-concrete cylinders, stationed three across beneath gabled metal roofs, gives these structures their sense of mythic presence in the flat landscape on the outskirts of El Campo. The rice dryers presage a sequence of such structures along U.S. 59 between El Campo and Edna.
