A symbol of El Campo's progressiveness at the turn of the twentieth century was its public library, founded in 1902, the first in Wharton County. The county built this economical one-story former library building as its first purpose-built home. A protruding frame of fossilized Texas limestone encircling the central entrance bay identifies the diminutive buff brick–faced building as a public building of the Great Depression era.
