The Menger is the oldest of the city's hotels, and its early date coincided with the use of the former mission compound buildings (
SA1) by the U.S. Army. It was built for German immigrant William Menger. The pedimented facade of the stuccoed brick building is the work of Giles, designed in a rather simplified Renaissance Revival. The hotel interior has undergone many remodelings, but still retains its nineteenth-century atrium lobby supported on cast-iron columns.
