The social hall was the meeting place of the German immigrant community, the Society of Turners, who were dedicated to athletic activity. The hall originally served as a setting for lectures, dances, and gymnastics. Wahrenberger's design of red brick with contrasting cream-colored limestone and painted metal cornices is almost overwrought, but that is its charm, as is the giant order of columns on the second and third floors above the entrance. In spite of its current use as a nightclub, the grand double-height ballroom on the second floor has survived intact and accommodates live bands just as well as it did orchestras originally.
