The design of this towered villa–type house is derived from a pattern book design published in 1891 by Knoxville architect George F. Barber, as Margaret Culbertson documents in Texas Houses Built by the Book: The Use of Published Designs, 1850–1925 (1999) . Raised high above grade, the house enhances its actual size through the reiteration of gablets, which appear to be piled one atop the other. The house was rehabilitated by architect Bart Truxillo, one of the leaders of Houston's preservation movement in the last quarter of the twentieth century. It shares its block with the much more modest, stucco-faced Heights Women's Club of 1912 at 1846 Harvard Street.
