One of the state's oldest private institutions of higher learning, “St. Eds,” as it is known locally, is affiliated with the Catholic Church. The campus administration building, Main Building, burned and was rebuilt in 1903 under the guidance of Nicholas J. Clayton, who also designed Holy Cross Hall (1903). In 1986, the university began an aggressive growth campaign and initiated restoration of Main Building by Graeber, Simmons and Cowan. Forming a quadrangle with Clayton's Main and Holy Cross buildings, Trustee Hall (2004, Andersson-Wise) is the first campus addition under a master plan of 2001 that will eventually include academic facilities, dormitories, a chapel, and athletic fields.
