This third land office built by the state is considered the first building in Texas designed by a university-trained architect. Stremme, German born and educated, immigrated to Texas in the 1840s and began work with the Texas Land Office. The Rundbogenstil building's four-foot-thick stone and brick walls with heavily articulated windows are essentially fireproof. Restored in 1992, the land office became the Capitol Visitors Center in 1994. To the north is the Texas State Library and Archives of 1961 by Adams and Adams, a somewhat out-of-date 1930s Federal-style red granite vault for the state's archive treasures. It was renovated in 2009 by Bailey Architects.
