The bakery sets the pace of low-scale commercial buildings along the state's main street. It was sensitively restored in 1962 by the Austin Heritage Society and is one of the oldest buildings remaining in downtown. The building was threatened with demolition in the 1970s but archaeological excavations revealed the foundations of the temporary 1882 state capitol building next door. The excavations were incorporated into the adjacent plaza and remain visible. The building stands out from its neighbors for its use of brick rather than local stone, accented by three pointed arches with polychrome stone-and-brick voussoirs that give a Moorish touch.
