1939, Arthur C. Barlow. 319 N. Jones St.

One of Southwest Virginia's few Moderne buildings, this house was constructed for Leon Beville Sr., business manager for Lincoln Industries. The concrete house is composed of a broad blocklike first story and a centered smaller second story that allows room for two rooftop terraces. Detailing is minimal, consisting principally of horizontal bands on the second floor. The house has iron casement windows, and a curved wall of glass bricks leads to the entrance. Views from the roof terraces overlook hills, the river, and the railroad as well as the house's formal gardens. A winding driveway leads to the rear of the house where the basement-level garage is modestly tucked away.
