One of the most felicitous of Shepherdstown's late Georgian–early Federal houses, this example has Flemish bond brickwork, a molded water table, decorative wooden jack arches with elongated keystones, and a handsome doorway. The facade is four bays rather than the usual three or five. When Chapline bought the lot, the court recorder listed “Lewis Wisenall and two D—d Dutchmen” as witnesses. In all likelihood, he could neither spell their names nor decipher their signatures.
