Two small, two-bay, one-and-one-half-story houses near the west end of town are typical of Shepherdstown's earliest log houses. One, with a log facade and clapboarded side walls, stands on a rubblestone foundation on the south side of West High Street near the corner of Shoe Lane. The other, now entirely clapboarded, stands a short block west at High Street and Brown's Alley. Both are similar in size and arrangement to James Rumsey's house as depicted by Henry Howe and James Taylor.
