An octagonal belfry and slight ogee-shaped cap merging into a spire have provided an architectural sentinel at Shepherdstown's eastern edge for more than 200 years. These almost baroque elements cap a square tower built of rough rubble limestone and together are the only surviving parts of a church dedicated in 1795. Michael Yeasley, parishioner and Revolutionary War veteran, procured the bells, cast in France, in 1798. The tower is attached to a later, rather plain, brick church, whose cornerstone was laid on August 10, 1839.
