Gilmer County Courthouse

1922–1924, A. F. Wysong. West side of Court St. between Howard and Church sts.

Fittingly, the courthouse crowning Glenville's steep acropolis is a classical temple of justice. In some respects a simplified version of the same architect's Wyoming County Courthouse (
WY1) in Pineville, it is fronted by an engaged portico with two three-quarter Doric columns flanked by pilasters. Above the full entablature, an oculus centers the pediment. Three-bay recessed wings extend to either side. The courthouse is constructed of light brownish yellow brick with limestone columns and trim, all set on a rusticated sandstone foundation, and all blending harmoniously in the same color range. Numerous steps lead up to the courthouse, and massive sandstone retaining walls surround the lawn.
