Washington and Jefferson streets lead out of town and boast several grand houses in the styles often used around 1900 along similar routes in prosperous small Virginia towns. The finest of these houses is the large Queen Anne residence that Holt created for lawyer George B. Finch by enlarging an old L-shaped frame farmhouse. Holt enriched it with half-timbered and shingled gables, a snarling rooftop dragon, a wraparound porch with a conical-roofed gazebo at one corner (a popular feature on this street), and a three-story round tower at the other.
