The former Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Store, now a Mecklenburg County building (1949; 423 Madison), and the U.S. Post Office (1958; 419 Madison) are small-town examples of mid-century modernism. The ABC store has the severe stripped classical facade that became a trademark of ABC stores and the post office is faced with red brick and jalousie windows. The steel-framed water tower behind the buildings dates to 1928. Opposite the ABC store, at number 420, is a service station (1948) clad with white enamel panels, with a front pylon separating the square bays for mechanics and a curved end for attendants and motorists.
