In replacing the nearby Llewllyn Branch Library built in 1914, Milwaukee architect Peot-Shields created a dramatic, light-filled space under a curved roof. The facade’s tricolor brick courses evoke a hint of the former neoclassical library, but Peot-Shields’s modern design offers a more welcoming appearance. Bands of clerestory windows stretching beneath the roof catch morning and afternoon light; a larger canted arched window along the south also fills the library with natural light. Engberg Anderson’s indirect lighting design employs low-energy fixtures to provide seamless light between the blonde-wood stacks. Above the stacks, a combination of steel and wood trusses creates a high, vaulted ceiling. Artist Peter Flannery designed a linoleum floor depicting Bay View’s settlement in 1846, its industrial heritage of 1900, and the contemporary community.
