The station is an example of the many elongated frame depots with white board-and-batten sheathing and green trim that were constructed by the Norfolk and Western (N&W) Railway in small towns along its lines. The freight section was enlarged c. 1912 when the right end was constructed as an open shed that was later enclosed. At the same time, a passenger station was added and linked to the old freight station by a breezeway, but was destroyed by fire in 1962. Restored with federal and local funds, the depot now serves as a community and tourism center.
