Built for Robert T. Woods, later a member of the Virginia Senate, and his wife, Anne, daughter of Caleb Tate (see
FN6
), this raised brick Federal cottage is an unusual form for the area. The three-bay house originally had only one large room on each floor and a detached brick kitchen. Later changes and additions included the porch and the section connecting the house to the kitchen. The two brick columns, now at basement level supporting the porch, were the columns of an original one-bay portico where they stood in front of the engaged brick columns flanking the entrance. The roof of the brick kitchen was raised to a half-gambrel when it was linked to the house's central frame section. This house and neighboring Mount Pleasant ( FN6) have similar and exceptionally good Federal brickwork that was laid by the same master masons.
