Before 1829. Market St. between 4th and 6th sts.

This square was platted for Pottsville's market before commerce shifted to Centre Street. It now provides a landscaped setting for several sculptures including the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (1891, August Zeller, sculptor). One corner of the square is anchored by the First Methodist Church (1903), a late Richardsonian Romanesque work by New York City church specialist George Kramer. Opposite is the Garfield Diner (1953), a shining Kullman diner.
