The cemetery's Egyptian Revival gatehouse on axis with 14th Street is flanked by stone cubes topped by cavetto cornices. Philadelphian Meehan was the author of The American Handbook of Ornamental Trees (1853) and a noted landscape designer who presumably was responsible for the garden layout. The gatehouse is a conservative carryover of the Egyptian styles that had long been associated with funereal architecture and were common in the 1830s through the 1850s.
