Only fragments remain of once magnificent Ridge Row, where the mansions of the Scranton family overlooked the furnaces of their Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company (
LK12). The former Joseph Scranton estate, tucked within its walled compound, is the most significant remnant of this Gilded Age cityscape. New York City architect Sturgis is best known for his Ruskinian Gothic work, making this Second Empire–style mansion, now part of the University of Scranton, an exception in his career.
