The Bohlin firm added to a stripped classical federal building by drawing it into a larger composition that forms an effective wall for Courthouse Square. A glassy entrance atrium joins the old and new limestone masses together, and creates a new front porch for people-watching along Washington Avenue. The “industrialesque” detailing that characterizes most of Bohlin's recent work is more appropriate here than elsewhere, recalling the steel production of the pre–Great Depression city.
